Back Pain
(Katishoola)
Back pain is discomfort anywhere along the spine, from the neck to the lower back. It can range from a mild, dull ache to sharp pain that limits everyday movement.
Understanding Back Pain
Back pain is discomfort anywhere along the spine, from the neck to the lower back. It can range from a mild, dull ache to sharp pain that limits everyday movement, and is one of the most common reasons patients seek treatment.
In Ayurveda, back pain (Katishoola) is closely linked to an aggravated Vata dosha, which governs movement and the nervous system.
Common Causes of Back Pain
Back pain may arise from strain, posture, lifestyle factors, age-related spinal changes or injury.
Muscle, Posture & Lifestyle Factors
Muscle or ligament strain from heavy lifting or a sudden awkward movement, poor posture and prolonged sitting, a sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise, and being overweight can contribute to back pain.
Spinal Changes & Injury
Age-related spinal degeneration and disc wear and tear, along with injury, falls or accidents, are also listed among the common causes of back pain.
Symptoms of Back Pain
Recognising the pattern of pain and associated symptoms can help patients decide when an evaluation is needed.

- Dull, aching pain in the lower, mid or upper back
- Pain that radiates to the buttocks or down the leg
- Stiffness and difficulty bending or standing for long periods

- Pain that worsens with sitting, standing or certain movements
