Understanding Arthritis
Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, causing pain, swelling and stiffness.
The two most common types covered in this treatment programme are Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
In Ayurveda, arthritis is closely linked to the build-up of Ama (toxins) and an imbalance of Vata dosha settling in the joints.
Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis
Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are different conditions with different underlying mechanisms and patterns of joint involvement.
Osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis is the "wear and tear" breakdown of joint cartilage over time. It is the most common type and typically affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips and spine as people age.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the joint lining (synovium), usually affecting the same joints on both sides of the body such as the hands, wrists and knees. It can occasionally affect other organs too.
Causes, Risk Factors & Symptoms
Recognising common risk factors and symptoms can help patients seek appropriate evaluation at an earlier stage.
