Understanding Arthritis

Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, causing pain, swelling and stiffness.

What Is Arthritis?

Understanding Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, causing pain, swelling and stiffness.

The two most common types covered in this treatment programme are Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

In Ayurveda, arthritis is closely linked to the build-up of Ama (toxins) and an imbalance of Vata dosha settling in the joints.

Early diagnosis matters: the sooner arthritis is identified, the better the chance of protecting the joint long-term.
Two Common Types

Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are different conditions with different underlying mechanisms and patterns of joint involvement.

✓

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Joint Wear & Tear

Osteoarthritis is the "wear and tear" breakdown of joint cartilage over time. It is the most common type and typically affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips and spine as people age.

✓

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Autoimmune Condition

Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the joint lining (synovium), usually affecting the same joints on both sides of the body such as the hands, wrists and knees. It can occasionally affect other organs too.

Know The Condition

Causes, Risk Factors & Symptoms

Recognising common risk factors and symptoms can help patients seek appropriate evaluation at an earlier stage.

✓

Common Causes / Risk Factors

  • Age-related joint wear and tear (OA)
  • Autoimmune response (RA)
  • Family history
  • Joint injury or overuse
  • Being overweight
  • Faulty diet and lifestyle habits
✓

Symptoms of Arthritis

  • Joint pain and stiffness, often worse in the morning or after rest
  • Swelling around the affected joint(s)
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Warmth and tenderness in the joint
  • Symmetrical joint involvement, more typical of RA
  • Fatigue, more typical of RA
  • Gradual worsening with activity, more typical of OA
Early diagnosis matters: the sooner arthritis is identified, the better the chance of protecting the joint long-term.
